A teacher's concern over the Velveeta Shells and Cheese Commercial (Be like that guy) - Velveeta Shells and Cheese

My name is Katherine Wood. I work at a second chance school in St. George, UT. This morning I spent at least an hour with several students trying to convince them to reach higher than the bottom rung of society. Due to the recession, the fact that they were foster children, and the over all stereotype these students are facing they have pretty much given up reaching for anything. I finally convinced one young man to try and reach for his diploma. He's skeptical, but at least willing to try.

When I came home today your commercial about the guy who flies helicopters in the mall and plays hacky sack while obviously in his thirties was incredibly discouraging. Here we are in the United States, in a recession, students are considering not going to college, not trying, dropping out of school-- and your company chooses to promote that idea???? It makes me heartsick. We should be encouraging our youth to try, to achieve, to make the U.S. better not each Mac and Cheese in an elevator. I find it a sad commentary on your company that you are promoting the "Reach for the bottom rung" philosophy.

Sincerely,

Katherine Wood
