Direct Energy

I've got a furnace protectionplan expiring 29/07/12. On June 26/12 I notified them I wish not to rebew, but still have to pay until the end of July. Today I called them for servicing my AC as it made two loud noises during the early morning. I was told I was not covered as my plan had been cancelled. The expiry period is a month away yet was my reply. the agent stated regardless of that I am no longer covered.
My husband is 80 yrs old, has COPD, sleeps with a full face mask, uses puffers and has bad sleep apnea. We need to have AC in working order as he would not survive through this heat wave.
What advice or assistance am I entitled to? I should be covered still, but I do I make these mechanical people understand my rights?
